abstract

melissa officinalis l. is a medicinal plant with a large variety of pharmacological effects and traditional applications. this study aimed to evaluate the protective and antioxidant activities of the extract of m. officinalis aerial parts on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (huvecs) under oxidative stress induced by h 2 o 2 . cells were incubated with h 2 o 2 (0.5 mm, 2 h) after pretreatment with m. officinalis extract (25-500 µg/ml). cell viability was evaluated by 3-(4, 5- dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (mtt) assay. the concentration of hydroperoxides and ferric reducing antioxidant power (frap) were measured in intra- and extra-cellular fluids. pretreatment of huvecs with m. officinalis extract at the concentrations of 100-500 µg/ml improved the cell viability after exposure to h 2 o 2 significantly. it also decreased hydroperoxides concentration and increased frap value in both intra- and extra-cellular fluids. the results revealed antioxidant and cytoprotective effects of m. officinalis against h 2 o 2 -induced oxidative stress in huvecs. due to the valuable antioxidant activity, this plant extract may have potential benefits for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Protective effect of Melissa officinalis extract against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in human vascular endothelial cells

Melissa officinalis L. is a medicinal plant with a large variety of pharmacological effects and traditional applications. This study aimed to evaluate the protective and antioxidant activities of the extract of M. officinalis aerial parts on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) under oxidative stress induced by H2O2. Cells were incubated with H2O2 (0.5 mM, 2 h) after pretreatment wit...

Protective effect of Melissa officinalis aqueous extract against Mn-induced oxidative stress in chronically exposed mice

Manganese (Mn) is an essential element for biological systems; however occupational exposure to high levels of this metal may lead to neurodegenerative disorders, resembling Parkinson's disease (PD). While its mechanisms of neurotoxicity have yet to be fully understood, oxidative stress plays a critical role. Thus, the main goal of this study was to investigate the efficacy of aqueous extract o...

Cytoprotective Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Pinus eldarica Bark against H2O2-Induced Oxidative Stress in Human Endothelial Cells

Background: Pinus eldarica is a widely growing pine in Iran consisting of biologically active constituents with antioxidant properties. This study investigates the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of P. eldarica bark against oxidative damage induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Methods: The total phenolic content of p. eldarica extract was dete...

Melissa Officinalis L. Extracts Protect Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells against Oxidative Stress-Induced Apoptosis

BACKGROUND We evaluated the protective effect of ALS-L1023, an extract of Melissa officinalis L. (Labiatae; lemon balm) against oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19 cells). METHODS ARPE-19 cells were incubated with ALS-L1023 for 24 h and then treated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Oxidative stress-induced apoptosis and intracellular generation ...
